Surrogacy and COVID-19

Psychological Support Program

During a surrogate programme, a surrogate mother does not only need regular medical screening, but she will also require psychological support and assistance at different stages.

Together with Antonina Nakonechnaya, the leading specialist in Reproductive Perinatal Psychology, we have developed the unique Psychological Support Program.

Our psychological support programme will help to stabilize the emotional state of the surrogate mother, minimize stress, and provide psychological comfort for both the surrogate mother and the unborn baby.

The program consists of the following stages:

  1. Evaluation the degree of readiness for the surrogacy program of a woman: determination of motivation; determination of peculiarities of the woman`s character; predicting her behavior during pregnancy; evaluation of possible attachment to the unborn baby;
  2. Psychological support during pregnancy (especially support in the period just prior to the transfer of the embryos of genetic parents to the surrogate mother and up to receiving the first hCG test result; also one of the important psychological stages is the first fetal movement);
  3. An express-course for surrogate mothers during pregnancy: the psychology of the "mother-child" dyad; the influence of a woman's emotional state during pregnancy on the development and behavior of the fetus; physiological and emotional changes in a woman during pregnancy;
  4. Preparing a woman to give the child to genetic parents after childbirth;
  5. Rehabilitation after childbirth and adaptation to normal life.

A psychological examination is necessary not only for a surrogate mother, but also for Intended Parents to reduce worrying and anxiety, as well as to successfully prepare for a meeting with a long-awaited baby. Ms Antonina also provides consultations for Intended Parents.

Questions

  • What methods do you use to assess the candidate's readiness to start the programme?
    Our therapist will conduct an in-depth interview with the candidate to determine her temperament and general readiness to start the programme. Various psychological tests will help to predict the possible consequences of participation in the surrogacy programme and the difficult moments that may arise during its course.
  • How can genetic parents affect the psychological stability of surrogate mother?
    The level of psychological comfort of a surrogate mother is influenced by many factors: comfortable living conditions, quality medical care and so on. By creating the right conditions, as well as regularly supporting the surrogate mother financially, you can rest assured of her psychological health. You can also provide additional psychological support via our Psychological Support Programme.
  • How can genetic parents prepare for the start of the programme?
    Starting a surrogacy programme is a significant step for intended parents. Not only should you be financially stable, but also mentally ready to welcome a new member of your family. To help ensure that you adapt well to your new roles as mom and dad, we would recommend you to approach a local therapist who can support you during your surrogacy journey.
