Nutrition for surrogate mothers

A surrogate mother`s diet is no different from the diet of any other pregnant woman. In our surrogacy programmes, we recommend following the general dietary guidelines developed and approved by the World Health Organization (WHO). Included in their recommendations are the following main points:

  • Within each product group it is necessary to choose useful products;
  • There should be variety in each product group;
  • Preference should be given to seasonal fruits, berries and vegetables;
  • Preference should be given to local products, especially vegetables and fruits;
  • Recommended products should be consumed in the appropriate amount which is determined on an individual basis.

As for the diet of a pregnant surrogate mother, we strongly recommend that they include in their diet foods that help to maintain the pregnancy, healthy fetus development and to quit certain foods that may put you at risk of continuing with a healthy pregnancy.

Wholegrain products. Porridge and products made from wheat, rye, oats, corn, brown rice, pearl barley, millet are not only a great source of daytime energy, but also protein, complex carbohydrates, fibre, and B vitamins.

Protein products. Meat, poultry products, eggs and fish can be excellent sources of protein and other essential nutrients, including B vitamins and iron. All of these foods are great for a surrogate mother's diet, provided they are sufficiently heat-treated to eliminate the risk of parasite infestation that can live in raw foods

Nuts and beans. Walnuts are one of the best sources of natural omega-3 for a pregnant woman's body and baby's development. Beans help to relieve nausea for the surrogate mother and impact the development of the baby's eyes and skin.

Low-fat dairy products. Dairy products are an excellent source of calcium which plays a vital role in the formation of a child's bones. What`s more, calcium is needed to build strong teeth, support normal blood clotting and develop muscle function and nerve endings in the fetus.

However, there is also a list of foods that surrogate mothers are recommended to avoid during pregnancy:

Raw meat and fish. Unheated products of animal origin can often contain parasites and bacteria that can not only harm the healthy development of the fetus, but also lead to serious abnormalities and even early termination of pregnancy. Therefore, we do not recommend eating sushi; raw and lightly salted fish; or medium-cooked meat or steaks with blood in order to reduce the risk of infection with salmonella, toxoplasmosis and other bacteria.

Certain species of fish. Fish such as tuna or king mackerel may contain high levels of mercury which is dangerous to a child's development. It is also not recommended to eat shark meat and swordfish.

Unpasteurized dairy products. Raw milk, soft and mouldy cheeses, or other unpasteurized dairy products may contain bacteria that belong to the listeria group. Infection with such bacteria can cause stillbirth or damage to the development of the baby in the surrogate mother`s womb.

Mushrooms. For the duration of the pregnancy, it is recommended to avoid eating mushrooms in any form. Mushrooms, like sponges, accumulate chemicals and emissions from the atmosphere.

In addition to dietary restrictions, we strictly prohibit surrogate mothers from drinking alcohol and smoking. There is no need to talk about the consequences of such habits, especially when both the surrogate mother and the genetic parents are interested in giving birth to a healthy baby.

Vitamins are also an integral part of a pregnant surrogate mother`s diet. The doctor selects these individually for each client.

For surrogate mothers who are participating in the programme for the first time, we also recommend the following eating habits during pregnancy:

Eat often and in small portions; Choose fresh products and freshly prepared dishes; Drink enough water; When cooking, choose dishes that are steamed, baked, boiled or stewed.

These simple tips can help surrogate mothers consume enough energy and nutrients to maintain pregnancy and develop a healthy baby in the womb. They can also have a positive effect on the surrogate mother's mental health and help ensure easy recovery after childbirth and completion of the programme.
